Stained glass fitted into a space that already exists

Homes, cafés, studios. Windows, partitions, signs. Solar surveys the site, draws it up properly, sends glass samples so you choose the real colour, then makes it and fits it with the installers.

I Hate Monday Dining

Stained glass sign

  • An Khánh wardHo Chi Minh City
  • Ngũ Hành Sơn wardDa Nang
Tấm biển kính treo trên quầy nhà hàng đang mở cửa, nền kính xanh ngược sáng

Five bays of glass hanging in a steel frame directly above the counter. The frame was there before the glass was, so the sign had to follow it rather than the other way round. That is also why it could not have come from any stock pattern.

Overall
4,399 × 700 mm
Position
Hung from the ceiling, directly over the counter
Structure
Fitted into a steel frame already on site

Textured, clear, black

Alibi — Bar & Bites

Stained glass table top and a roundel in the gable

  • Xuân Hoà wardHo Chi Minh City
Huy hiệu kính màu hình bầu dục trên hồi nhà, một vệt sáng cắt ngang

Two jobs in one bar. High on the gable, an oval badge carrying the bar's initial and two glasses, set high enough that the whole room sees it once the lights are on.

Down on the floor, a round table top pieced from red, amber and mirror glass, soldered into one flat surface that will take a glass set down on it. The last step we did at the bar itself: running a bead of sealant around the edge once the top was in its place.

Tramonto Phú Quốc Hotel

Stained glass lift-car wall and bar counter fronts

  • Phú Quốc special zoneAn Giang
Vách kính màu buồng thang máy, dải màu chuyển từ vàng cam dưới chân lên xanh nhạt trên đỉnh

Two kinds of work in one hotel, and they are nothing like each other.

The lift car wall is the coloured one: a band of light running from warm orange at the foot up to pale blue at the top, readable even as the doors are closing. It is the only place in the building using strong colour.

The rest is the run of upright cabinet fronts at the bar: grained and clear glass, the pattern carried by the lead itself, nearly colourless. They stand behind the counter all day, so they are not allowed to overpower what is set on them.

Romance Villa

Arched stained glass window

  • Vạn Hạnh wardDa Lat
Cửa sổ vòm kính màu cuối một hành lang vòm, đèn tường và chậu cây hai bên

An arched window at the end of a corridor, and the corridor was built around it.

The ground is grained glass, almost colourless, so the Đà Lạt light passes through without dyeing the whole walkway. The colour is only at the border: a rose vine running round the edge of the arch, and the villa's name, handwritten, set in the middle.

Overall
Position
The arched opening at the end of a corridor
Structure
Fitted into a masonry arch already built
Glass
Textured and coloured glass

How a project runs

Six steps
  1. 01

    The enquiry

The space, the size, how many, by when — whatever you already know.

  2. 02

    Survey and measure

Solar comes to measure properly, and to see when the light crosses the place.

  3. 03

    Drawings

A design drawing, then a full technical one. Panels are redivided where the structure asks for it.

  4. 04

    Quotation

A price against the drawing that exists, then a conversation to settle the scheme.

  5. 05

    Colour and sign-off

Solar sends glass samples so you pick the real colour, then settles the fitting with the installers.

  6. 06

    Make and fit

Cut and built at the workshop, then fitted on site with the installers.

Why there is no price here

Every building has its own size, its own frame, its own direction of sun. Solar quotes once the site is surveyed and the technical drawing is done — that is the point at which anyone knows how many panels the glass divides into, and what it really has to do.
